Holocaust TV Mini-series Movie (1978)

Holocaust is an Emmy Award winning television miniseries broadcast in four parts in 1978
on the NBC television network. Although the miniseries won several awards and received
critical acclaim, it was criticized by some including noted Holocaust author and survivor
Elie Wiesel who (according to the New York Times) called it "untrue, offensive (and)
cheap." [1]

It tells the story of the Holocaust from the perspective of the Weiss family of German
Jews, and from the point of view of a German family where the husband is a rising SS
member, who gradually becomes a merciless, bloodthirsty war criminal. Holocaust highlighted
numerous important events which occurred up to and during World War II, such as
Kristallnacht, the creation of Jewish ghettos and later, the use of gas chambers.
The series ultimately attempted to portray the atrocity of this genocide to viewers.

Meryl Streep as Inga Helms-Weiss in Holocaust.Holocaust was broadcast in four parts
from April 16 to April 19. It was extremely popular, earning a 49% market share. It
was also popular in Europe and had a major impact when it was broadcast in West Germany
in January 1979.

The nine-and-a-half hour program starred Meryl Streep, James Woods and Michael Moriarty,
as well as a large supporting cast. It was directed by Marvin J. Chomsky, a veteran of
countless television specials including ABC's highly successful miniseries Roots, which
first aired a year earlier, in 1977.

Berlin, Germany, 1935: Karl Weiss (James Woods), the artist son of a prosperous Jewish

Dorf (Michael Moriarty), a friend of the Weiss family gets a job as an aide to a top SS
official. He warns the Weiss family to leave Germany, but they refuse. Kristallnacht, the
" night of broken glass " occurs, with German mobs raging through the streets of Berlin
attacking Jews and destroying property. The Weiss family suffers a series of unspeakable
tragedies in the aftermath of Kristallnacht and Inga's husband, Karl is imprisoned at
Buchenwald. But their time of trouble is only just beginning.

Heydrich (David Warner) spells out the final solution for all the Jews in Europe. Karl
Weiss has been transferred to Theresienstadt concentration camp, which the Germans use to
display to the Red Cross officials and representatives of neutral countries. Karl finds out
that his fellow artists are creating propaganda paintings by day while secretly painting
images of the brutal conditions at the camp by night.

drawings. In Warsaw Josef and Berta Weiss are ordered onto a train bound for Auschwitz.

Moses Weiss (Sam Wanamaker) joins the resistance in the Warsaw ghetto and helps to hold
back 7000 German soldiers for twenty days. Barely alive Karl is removed from the Theresien-
stadt dungeon and briefly reunited with Inga who tells him she is carring his child. He is
taken to Auschwitz. After Rudi's wife Helena is killed in an attack on a German convoy,
he is captured and sent to Sobibor, a prison camp in eastern Poland. He escapes with other
prisoners and is reunited with Inga and her 2 year old son who were released during the
liberation of Theresienstadt. As the war draws to a close Inga returns to Berlin and Rudi
agrees to lead a group of orphaned boys past the British blockade into Palestine.

First, in the lavish drama "Anne of the Thousand Days" (1969), the
ill-fated romance between King Henry VIII of England and his second wife, Anne
Boleyn, is recounted. The king's (Richard Burton) obsession with siring a male
heir gives rise to his abandonment of wife Catharine of Aragon, in favor
of the young Anne, (Genevieve Bujold), and, ultimately, the formation of the
Church of England. Co-stars Irene Papas, Anthony Quayle, John Colicos;
based on Maxwell Anderson's play. Then, in "Mary, Queen of Scots" (1971),
Vanessa Redgrave stars as the strong-willed Mary Stuart, whose Catholic faith
put her at odds with Glenda Jackson's Queen Elizabeth I of England and
scheming half-brother Patrick McGoohan for control of the Scottish throne.
Timothy Dalton, Trevor Howard also star. 4 2/3 hrs. total on two discs.
Widescreen (Enhanced); Soundtrack: English Dolby Digital stereo; Subtitles: English
(SDH), French; isolated music score; featurette.
