Horton Foote wrote this. The two films 'Baby The Rain Must Fall' and 'Tender Mercies' I had always thought of together for many years, because they are so similar. I knew Foote had written 'Tender Mercies' but it was many years later before I realized he had written 'Baby The Rain Must Fall' too. The are both stories of country singers, down on their luck at the time, and in relationships. Both movies are slow-paced, moody, and character driven dramas.

Henry Thomas has just been released from prison, and returns to his wife and daughter. There's a sense of despair here among all the characters, and we are easily able to identify with them and their feelings of hopelessness. By the end of the film we feel as if we know them, and we want to reach out to them to tell them that eventually everything is going to be okay. Foote excels at being able to create such realistic characters and place them in such a situation that we can believe it may be a true story. We know Georgette is like us in many ways, and don't ever question the lack of glamour in Remick's role. In McQueen's case, one of the reasons he is able to pull off his role so well is that he himself waas a rather wayward youth.

This is one of McQueen's least recognized and most forgotten films. Robert Mulligan made 'To Kill a Mockingbird' in 1962. The following year he teamed up with McQueen to make 'Love with the Proper Stranger' ( If anyone has it, please post it! ). Two years later they joined forces again to make this wonderful film, which I think is one of McQueen's finest. Sometimes the anti-hero is more interesting than the hero.

Love with the Proper Stranger (1963)

When Angie Rossini finds out she's pregnant, she tracks down Rocky
Papasano the musician with whom she had a one night stand. Angie works
a sales clerk in a department store and comes from a close knit Italian
family where her brothers keep a close eye on her. The two really don't
know one another but Rocky agrees to arrange for her to have an
abortion but when he sees the conditions under which it will be
performed, he gets her out of there. Faced with his situation, Rocky
asks Angie to marry him but she seems uninterested, especially since he
sounds like he's taking a dose of bad medicine, and turns to a lovelorn
suitor, Anthony, as a solution to her situation. Rocky continues to try
and see her however and it soon becomes apparent that she also has
another plan.

You know my hubby is fighting for this country too and I am going to tell
you what he said sometimes the world of movies, music and art keep their
spirits up and going and sometimes and escape from what they go threw everyday.
In short Cancer is a killer and there are different kinds of battles. No
life is less than another. I am very upset he is gone. Everyone has a place in
this world. You are not to judge others. Sorry for the drama. But I am an
Army Wife and sometimes we need to put those who step out of their place back
in it.
